Department of
Botany
Exploring the rich Himalayan biodiversity of Azad Jammu & Kashmir — integrating classical plant sciences with molecular biology, biotechnology, and AI to train the next generation of botanical scientists and environmental stewards.
About the Department
Department of Botany, UoH Kahuta
The Department of Botany at the University of Haveli, Forward Kahuta, was established in 2023 to meet the growing demand for scientific expertise, academic excellence, and environmental stewardship in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Our region is a treasure trove of Himalayan biodiversity, featuring mountainous, sub-alpine, and temperate flora that provide vital medicinal and economic benefits to local communities.
As a newly founded department, we have meticulously designed our curriculum to align with the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy. Our program uniquely integrates traditional plant sciences — such as Plant Systematics, Anatomy, Mycology, Physiology, and Ecology — with cutting-edge disciplines including Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Plant Biotechnology, Forensic Botany, and AI in Botany.
Practical learning is at our core, emphasizing field excursions and laboratory experimentation to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Our goal is to produce graduates who are not only experts in plant sciences but also ethical leaders in environmental conservation.
Key Facilities
Research Infrastructure
A centerpiece of our department is the Research Herbarium — a specialized repository dedicated to the systematic collection and preservation of the regional flora of Haveli. This facility serves as a 'living library' for researchers and students, providing an essential foundation for studies in plant taxonomy, conservation, and the identification of rare medicinal species.
We are also embracing the future by integrating AI technologies, allowing our botanists to process massive datasets and unlock deeper insights into plant ecosystems. Our departmental library hosts a curated collection of textbooks and journals, while our newly established Botany Research Laboratory is equipped with modern facilities to support advanced student research.
